Inside the CVA Scout 35 Whelen Black
The Scout is CVA’s single-shot break-action rifle. It’s light, simple and easy to learn, which is why it’s a common first deer rifle.
A reversible cocking spur lets you thumb the hammer from either side, even with a scope mounted. A single shot teaches good habits, because you make the first round count. The stock is 100 percent ambidextrous, so left-handed shooters get the same fit. A CrushZone recoil pad takes the sting out of heavier rounds.
The Black finish keeps glare down in the field, and the synthetic stock won’t swell or warp in wet weather.
Why 35 Whelen?
The 35 Whelen is a 30-06 case opened up to take .358 inch bullets. It pushes 200 to 250 grain bullets at useful speeds without the cost or recoil of a big magnum. Elk and moose hunters like it in timber, where shots are close and a wide, heavy bullet matters more than flat trajectory.
SAAMI publishes the official chamber and cartridge drawings on its cartridge and chamber drawings page. There’s also a readable 35 Whelen history on Wikipedia.
